The Dark Sphinx Candles
This next customer story comes from Agnes Ozolina-Grisane proud owner of The Dark Sphinx Candles! Agnes describes the business as ‘candles made with a tiny bit of magic!’ and believes in the mantra of ‘Success is liking yourself, Liking what you do, And liking how you do it!
To get started, we asked Agnes to tell us about their business! Agnes told us that she has always loved candles. All of them. Some more than others. But she loved them all. Pillar candles have always been her favourites. She told us how she likes them because they remind her of times ago when electricity wasn’t a thing, when people would read a book in candle light. Agnes told us that a friend had recently gotten back to making container candles and how she begged her to show her how she was doing it. So Agnes came over with all her magic stuff and she fell in love with making candles. That’s when she knew - she can do this.
So what made Agnes want to try her hand at candle/wax melt making? Her friend started her wax melt business and she told us that she was inspired by this and that she wanted to make pillar candles herself, especially because she thinks that some pillar candles are so overpriced. Agnes told us that price was a big factor in wanting to make pillar candles, she wanted to make them for herself in the first place. And then - who knows!
So how did she start her business? First, Agnes invested in moulds, then wax and fragrances and before she started to think about expanding her business.
There is a clear aesthetic going on so we wanted to know if there was a story behind her name and logo? She told us that she always loved Sphinx cats and has always been fascinated by them. She also loves all goth, dark, magical things. Hence the name and the branding!
We also wanted to know how she chooses her candle/wax melt scents? Agnes told us that she chooses her fragrances by selecting ones that she loved as a kid, as she grew up in the countryside and has been a big influence for her. She told us how she loved meadows, forests and flowers and has always loved fresh scents, all of this is what influences her scent choices for her business!
Lastly, we asked Agnes if she has any advice for those hoping to build their own candle business? She told us that you should not be afraid. Candle making takes time and loads of testing. But the end result will be amazing and worth your time and effort.
