For all things candle and home fragrance making!
Scents of the Village
Next up, we get to hear from Debbie, the proud owner of Scents of the Village. From teacup candles to wonderful wax melts Debbie has turned her side business into something far greater than expected. Let’s delve deeper into what Debbie has to say about her booming business.
Debbie’s daughter bought her a candle making kit from us here at Supplies for Candles for Christmas, but she decided to give it to her mum early as she wanted her mum to make her a candle and Debbie loved it! Debbie also found that most shop-bought candle fragrances didn’t last long, so she wanted to make her own that did last. Debbie is a hairdresser by trade but recently had to cut her hours due to arthritis in her shoulder and hip. She decided to make a few more candles and wax melts for practice and got her family and friends to try them. She then bought more supplies and instantly became addicted.
When lockdown started Debbie had just started her business and then had all the time in the world. She advertised on her local Facebook page and had harnessed quite a lot of interest as she was able to deliver on foot whilst walking the dog. During this time she sold a lot of candles and customers would message her asking if she could deliver a candle for a friends birthday or anniversary. Debbie knows that people are now buying locally which means she has a whole bunch of repeat customers. She hasn’t made too much profit yet but she thinks that’s down to her as she can’t resist a new fragrance oil or trying a new wooden wick!
So what’s the story behind the name? Scents of the village developed as a name as Debbie’s plan is to market her Christmas products by road name accompanied by a Christmas twist. So how does she choose her scents? Debbie chooses her scents by trying to tick each box for her customers, which means opting for two flower, two fresh, one or two seasonal and a food-related scent. Our Spring Awakening Fragrance Oil is also a favourite for Debbie, and so is our Dove dupe.
We wanted to know what advice Debbie would give to those wanting to start out how she did, her answer; the profit is slow but sure. Don’t always go by what fragrances you like. You almost have to be neutral. Go for it. It’s the small things that become so therapeutic, like watching the mica powder as you mix it.
