For all things candle and home fragrance making!
Four Little Flowers
For this touching story we get to hear from Heather Mawhinney, the proud owner of Four Little Flowers.
Four Little Flowers opened around a year and a half ago. Four little flowers is now Heather herself and her husband's full time job. The idea of them both starting this joint venture together was a scary leap, especially with 3 children and a mortgage to pay but they both knew that they had to follow their dreams. Heather never thought that they would be running their own business when they started and it’s a real pinch me moment when they both think about what they are doing. They took on a unit at the end of lockdown and haven’t looked back. They have grown mostly from their amazing Instagram followers and word of mouth, but they have also have some amazing brand reps that have become an amazing support both personally and professionally.
We wanted to get to know Heather’s practices even more so we asked how she chooses her scents when making candles. She told us that she buys a lot of sample fragrances and tests them all no matter what. They never usually know what they are looking to add to their range until they smell it! They also keep on top of new waxes making sure they are still using the perfect blend!
So what got this husband and wife duo into candle making? Unfortunately, their son Joshua passed away when he was 2 days old. When he was home there was always a candle burning near his coffin and the fragrance was always tied with him in their mind. Heather soon found that she couldn’t buy that specific candle anymore and wanted to recreate the fragrance to help feel closer to him. One spring Heather and her daughters started experimenting in the kitchen making a mess with oils and pillar wax and it just grew from there.
When it came to getting her business off her ground Heather told us that it came from a lot of love, practice, support and encouragement from friends and family as well as a little money from their savings pot. They truly invested in getting their business up and running. Aside from getting started, we also wanted to know where Heather came up with the idea for her business name. She told us that its because her name is Heather hence the flower Part of the name and the rest is based on the fact that she is a mother to 4 children 3 living and one passed, all of which have all been instrumental in starting the business she felt that it was only right that they were incorporated into the name.
Last but not least, Heather shares her advice for those hoping to build their own candle business. She shared that it's all about testing. Test.Test. Ttest. Seek and absorb as much information as possible and just keep doing it! Short, simple but she’s straight to the point!
