Making Sustainable Choices as a Crafter
Swap Plastic Moulds For Reusable Silicone Ones
Although the majority of our plastic clamshells, deli pots and moulds are recyclable, there are even more sustainable choices you can make when crafting your wax melts. Opting for our multiple-use silicone moulds will allow you to make multiple melts using only one mould! Just pour your wax, pop your melts out, wash it and you’re ready to use it over and over again! Your melts can then be packaged in recyclable and sustainable packaging to ensure fewer plastics end up at landfill.
Boil Only What You Need
Whether you’re using a kettle to clean your dirty utensils and waxy jugs or boiling a pan of water to melt your wax over, many people are prone to using too much water. Not only does this often result in the water being wasted but it also means that energy is wasted to heat the excess water. For melting your wax over a pan you only need enough to keep your bowl warm, using less water not only prevents wastage but it also saves energy.
Grow Your Own Botanicals
By growing even a little of your own produce in your garden helps you to improve your environmental footprint. Doing so decreases your products' transport distance (particularly air miles) and helps you to use flowers and plants that are in season, reducing the need for plastic packaging and the amount of land needed to grow the produce elsewhere.
It can also be greatly satisfying to produce botanicals and flowers yourself and can be much easier than you think. Don't let lack of space prevent you, certain crops can be grown in pots on even the smallest patios or window sills. Simply look online for tips and even if now is not the correct time to plant your chosen plant, then you can start preparing your garden and planning in advance for when the time is ready.
When planting your seeds/young plants, consider using compostable plant pots or even upcycling old plastic containers such as yoghurt pots to continue decreasing your plastic use.
Biodegradable Glitter
If you've ever used glitter before, then you'll know that it has a habit of getting everywhere and staying there. Many people are unaware that most glitter is actually made out of plastic and once washed down the drain glitter becomes another of many single use micro plastic pollutants that harms marine life for hundreds of years.
Our Bio-glitter® is made from a biodegradable film sourced from trees, primarily eucalyptus, which has come from responsibly managed plantations! Opting for sustainable accessories will help you to make a difference!
WEEE Recycling
This is the type of recycling that people often know the least about. WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. Small WEEE products - such as batteries and microwaves are often collected by councils as part of your weekly bin collection (check your councils website for information) and larger appliances can be dropped off at local collection points. Recycling the WEEE waste means that the metals and materials can be recovered and reused and avoid going straight to landfill. This is part of a Circular Economy. If you use batteries in your scales, a melting pot or any other small appliances when candle making, ensure you recycle them properly when they are no longer suitable for use!
Turn off Appliances When Not Using Them
This may sound like an overused suggestion, but ensuring to turn off your lights, wax melter and heat gun once you are done using them really can make a difference. Together, leaving them on or on standby unnecessarily can account for an extra 1,200kg CO2e a year*! Remember to also consider your other appliances such as your washing machine, to help save carbon.
How We're Being More Sustainable
Here at SFC, we have recently been recognised as a Carbon Neutral Business by the Carbon Neutral Organisation as of June 2021.
To date, we have offset 243 Tonnes of Carbon Dioxide by supporting VCS certified clean energy projects around the world!
Which will reduce carbon emissions via the displacement of fossil fuels helping to combat climate change and sustain our environment for future generations.
