How to make a Crystal Shard Candle
You will need:
•80g of Container wax
•50g of Melt Wax for the shards
•Dye of choice (we used Light Blue chip dye)
•1x Candle tin
•1x flat wax melt mould (we used the lid of our snap bar mould)
•Hob/Hotplate/Double Boiler
•Pan
•Heatproof Bowl
•Thermometer
•Scales
•Pouring Jug
Step 1: Measure your wax. Put your bowl on the scales and measure your wax to the desired amount (80g per snap bar mould).
Step 2: Melt your wax. Fill your pan with water and place on a hob under a low to medium heat. Place your bowl of wax onto the pan and stir gently until the wax has melted. Use your thermometer to tell when the wax has come to its required temperature.
Step 3: Adding fragrance oil. Pour the wax into your pouring jug once it reaches the specified pouring temperature. If you are using fragrance oil, pour your desired amount into the wax (we recommend about 6-10% of your wax). Once that has thoroughly been stirred in, gently pour it into your candle tin. But leave about 10% of your wax to finish the candle off later.
Step 4: Making your shards. Melt around 50g of melt wax following the process in step 2. Once it’s melted and at the recommended temperature, transfer to your pouring jug and add your dye. The more dye you use the stronger the colour will be, however we would recommend starting small and steadily adding more until you get the desired result. When the wax has solidified, get a knife and start chopping it up into small triangles to create the shards.
Step 5: Finishing Up. Arrange the shards on the top of the candle, then melt the final little bit of container wax and pour it onto the candle, covering the base of the shards. This final bit of wax helps to keep the shards in place. Once that’s done leave the candle for about 24 hours to set fully.
